10 must-have fashion
10 must-have fashion
Sick of your wardrobe, want some inspiration or simply desperate to know what is going to be hot this summer? Then here is the definitive top ten Summer 2005 must have items for boys and girls. Emily Ross reports.
GIRLS

1. Tiered Skirts
Sienna Miller, Jude Law’s equally gorgeous fiancé, and actress in her own right, has had a major impact on girls’ fashion this year, inspired by her seemingly effortless style, coined ‘boho’ or the ‘prairie girl’ look. This summer, fuller gypsy-style skirts are going to be gracing our high streets. The boho look is all about being floaty and feminine and this look is achieved by layers of fabrics. Tiered skirts are a must for the boho look, and can be worn with another Sienna favourite, the ‘smock top’, coupled with a beaded or embroidered hipster belt and Grecian-style sandals.
2. Necklaces
To accessorise the bohemian look you need beads, and lots of them. The layered necklaces mirror the layers of the tiered skirt or can individualise a jeans and smock top combo. Try mixing long and short necklaces, and opt for necklaces which combine natural materials such as wood, stones or shells to really achieve that prairie girl feel.
Big Bags
3. Big Bags
Finally an end to squeezing your life into a dainty handbag because this year bags have got big! If you can fit your folder, your make-up, your lunch and your gym clothes in then you know you are on the right track. This summer you might well be finding an outfit to go with your bag as the super size handbag is becoming much more than an accessory!
4. Wedges
This summer’s must-have footwear. Whether they’re earthy coloured espadrille wedges (perfect with shorts for the beach), funky fabric-patterned wedges (great with flares), or beaded platform wedges (for a night on the town), they’ll make your calves look amazing. And with so much choice you’ll be able to find a pair to suit your lifestyle.
5. Stripey Tops
The nautical look is back this summer for girls and boys. Look forward to seeing the celebration of navy and white and the revival of the stripey top. The tops come in various thicknesses but if you stick to bold primary colours you can’t go far wrong. Add a pair of navy denim shorts and a towering pair of wedges and you will be well equipped for a day on the beach!
BOYS

1. Stripey Sweaters
If the word nautical makes you think of bad fancy dress, fear not, Topman have come up with a twist on the sailor theme. London designer. Marcus Lupfer has introduced a new range of lightweight sweaters to Topman which come in a range of colours including blue, grey and khaki. The sweaters are all one colour but the sleeves are either striped or there is a stripy panel sewn to the hem. The shape is classic but the style is different enough to get you noticed.
2. Checked Shirts
This summer, the look on the street is totally Americana, so look out for the wide check plaid shirt where buttons have been swapped for funky poppers. Blue is a key colour for boy’s fashion this year so you’ll find shirts in various shades of blue. Checked shirts look great with long shorts and a baseball cap or for the more daring, buttoned up with a white short sleeved polo shirt on top.

Boys
3. Nylon bomber style jackets
Continuing on the American theme, thin nylon bomber jackets are back this summer. Some brands have added their own touches to the jackets with images such as eagles embroidered on the arms. Snap them up fast, I predict they are going to be big!
4. Baseball Caps
The Trucker hat has competition this summer in the shape of the rounder, less meshy, shorter peaked baseball cap. Look out for hats with various American logos and symbols on. This new style hat comes in slightly tamer colours than the Trucker, so if you stick to khaki, beige and white it will be easy to match your cap with any look or style.
5. Long Shorts
The summer, shorts have matured, no longer can you get away with bleached white micro short Pumas, this year’s shorts finish mid-calf, or at least reach knee-length. The best colours to go for are khaki, brown and black. For a punk rock look you can accessorise with a wallet chain and a band t-shirt.
