Are you backing the bid?
Here’s another reason to stay in London (as if there weren’t already reason
enough!). Unless you’ve spent the past year abroad, you might be aware
that we (ie Londoners) are bidding to host the 2012 Olympic Games. If we
win, it means London gets a whole load of cool new sports facilities.
What’s being proposed
It’s all happening in East
London – Stratford to be
precise! If we win, the
proposed Olympic Park
will be based on a 500-acre
site near the train station.
Nine (count ‘em) new
venues will include the
80,000 main stadium (which
would host the opening and
closing ceremonies) as well as
the athletics events. There will
also be a Hockey Centre with
two stadia, and a Velopark with
a velodrome and BMX track,
with four multi-sport arenas
for the remaining events.
Walking on water
The great news is that
work has already started
on the Aquatics Centre (to
contain two 50m
swimming pools and a
diving pool) which will be
built whether London wins the bid or
not. So we’re guaranteed a brand
spanking new swimming pool whatever
the outcome of the bid!
Fingers crossed
If you’re a sporty type yourself, or
even just enjoy watching other people,
the Olympics in London is sure to be a
once-in-a-lifetime experience. The
decision on whether or not London will
stage the 2012 is made on 2 July.
Until then we’re keeping our fingers
firmly crossed.
